What candle features should you look for?
There are many different types of candles available for purchase in the marketplace. If you’re looking at candles as a gift idea, however, you want to make the right choice.
A delicious fragrance
Scented candles, in particular, are great for gifting. The added fragrance, by way of either natural scents or essential oils delivers an added sensory experience beyond just the visual.
The fragrance in a scented candle should be strong enough to be clearly noticeable. Additionally, it should ideally last throughout the entire burn-time of the candle.
Common fragrances chosen for scented candles are often floral or fruit. For our own “Love Potion” jar candle we selected a blend of peonies and lychee. This created rich floral base notes rounded out nicely with the fruit overtones; perfect for relaxing in a hot bath or just enjoying as is.
Wax type
The type of wax, or waxes used for a candle is of great importance in a number of areas.
Firstly, many candles contain paraffin wax which is a petroleum byproduct. Paraffin wax is also sometimes referred to as a “synthetic wax” due to its petroleum-based nature. Paraffin candles typically have a smoky burn and release chemicals that are considered potentially harmful, such as benzene and toluene. This can also release unpleasant odours which a fragrance is then forced to cover up. Even with a good fragrance there may be residual undertones that can negatively affect the enjoyment gained from the candle.
Natural waxes, such as soy wax, coconut wax or beeswax, however, have two benefits. These natural waxes burn more slowly than paraffin, therefore providing the candle with a longer burn time. Soy wax candles can burn up to 50% longer than paraffin candles, and beeswax even longer than that.
The other benefit of natural waxes is that they tend to burn more cleanly. The smoke from the candles is minimised and will not have the sooty nature exhibited by paraffin waxes.
For our own candles, after much research and experimentation, we selected a unique wax blend of soy and coconut waxes with a small touch of beeswax. The combined soy and coconut waxes are a beautiful and clean bright white colour. The small addition of beeswax positively aids the burn-times and solidity of the candle without affecting the color.
Wick material
The wick is the core of any candle, and the part that actually holds the flame. Wicks can be made from cotton, wood or even metal. They can vary in size, with larger wicks shortening the burning time.
Cotton wicks are the most common. We have chosen cotton for our candles as they burn cleanly, matched for this purpose with the coconut and soy waxes.

When considering gifts suggestions for women, the aesthetics of the packaging is of vital importance. Of course, you can wrap nicely the gift yourself but how much better when the gift is beautifully presented in its own right.
