Mother’s Day 2024
This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, 12th May. Plan ahead, get up early, make her breakfast in bed and present your beautiful Moms Day gift.
Of course, you can celebrate your Mom at any time of the year. Give her a call, drop by for a chat, invite her to dinner; everything counts. If you still live at home, make sure you say “I love you” every day. And don’t forget grandmothers. They shouldn’t miss out, either.
And whilst we celebrate the official Mother’s Day in May, it hasn’t always been this way. The world has a long history of celebrating our Moms.
History of Mother’s Day
Since ancient times there have been many cultures that have special days to celebrate motherhood. The ancient Greeks and Romans had a day celebrating the Mother of the Gods, and through her, all mothers. There is some evidence to suggest that the ancient Egyptians also held celebrations.
In Britain, during the Middle Ages, a custom was observed for mothers on Laetare Sunday, approximately two weeks before Easter. This is still celebrated in Britain currently, though is more often being replaced by Mother’s Day.
The modern-day Mother’s Day was initiated in 1907 in the USA by a woman named Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia. Her mother had been responsible for organising women’s groups to promote friendship and health. After her mother passed away Ms. Jarvis held a memorial service on Sunday, 12th May 1907. Within five years this day was observed throughout almost all of the USA. It has continued and grown through to the present where a large proportion of the world recognises this date.
